Happy Black History month!

Before Instagram. Before filters. Before “aesthetic” was a buzzword, Black photographers were documenting truth, culture, and identity with depth the world is still catching up to.

Feature pioneers like Gordon Parks, Carrie Mae Weems, Roy DeCarava, and Ming Smith artists who didn’t just take photos, they shifted narratives.

I am a huge fan of Gordon Parks work and his why. Without people like Gordon Parks having the courage to tell stories with his images I wouldn't have the ability to even create a lane to tell stories on my journey.

Angle: How photography became a tool for dignity, resistance, and storytelling in Black communities.

Did You Know?

Gordon Parks was also a film director and composer. He picked up a camera and aimed it at injustice.

Did you know confidence peaks later in life? Many women report feeling more comfortable in their bodies in their 40s than in their 20s.

I didn’t realize it until I was approaching 40, that I had spent a lifetime people-pleasing. Somewhere along the way, I lost track of Antoinette, wait did I even ever know her? what she liked, what she didn’t, what she needed. I was stuck on a hamster wheel of familiar patterns, running hard but going nowhere. Letting that go wasn’t easy and it's constant work, but it's necessary.

As I started learning myself, I also discovered what truly ignited my confidence: photography. It didn’t just give me purpose it expanded my imagination. It gave me a place to explore, to experiment, to feel powerful in my own skin.

When I look back on my photography journey, it started with building the confidence to learn the basics, camera settings, editing, lighting, entrepreneurship. Five years later, I’m still learning all of those things. The difference now? I’m proficient, grounded, and unshakable. You can tell me I can’t do it but it won’t land. I know what I’m capable of, and I’m always chasing the next challenge to sharpen my vision as a boudoir photographer.

And that’s why confidence is at the center of everything I do now.

Boudoir is just the title that follows the experience. Confidence is the real transformation. It’s the through-line. The permission. The decision to choose yourself.

So let confidence lead your life, your healing, your creativity. And when that boudoir session crosses your mind, don’t overthink it.

Confidently say YESSSSSSSS.

I attended my first confident buiding experience. Latoya Dixon Vacation Boudoir School of Greenville Boudoir in South Carolina. First let me just tell you, She is a Beast with confidence building because mine went through the roof. This exerience taught me so much, not just as a woman but as a boudoir photographer myself. I just haven't reached my tribe, I haven't connected the words with the pain point or established a moment for a woman to want to explore the intimate side. This was eye opening on so many levels because I felt i should be further than what I am with boudoir photography. 5 years photography, 3 years of it Boudoir, currently in schoool for Digital Cinematography, I am still unbelievable proud for taking the steps i have taken to get to where I want to be but the real work starts now.

Latoya Dixon said " You will get there, you have this ora about yourself that is ready to come out and when it do whew girl." At the time I could only smile but this stuck with me. This happened in July 2025.
